In June we welcomed 20 interns to Fluent and AdParlor for our 10-week summer internship program. Get to know each of them below, along with some insight into what they learned in their roles across the organization this summer. We are so excited to see where their professional journeys take them in the future and are happy to have been a stepping stone on their career paths.
Learnings From Our Summer Interns

Melissa Chi
Business Analytics Intern, Fluent
Business Analytics Major, Columbia University, Class of 2022
What was your biggest takeaway from the summer internship?
My biggest takeaway is learning how to work in a professional environment. Even though I did not come into the office every day, I was able to learn how to act professionally in a workplace while still enjoying myself. Similarly, I learned how to communicate professionally through presentations, emails, meetings, and reports.
Explain a project you worked on. What did you accomplish?
A project that I worked on was creating overviews for reports. The objective was to create an introduction page for each report to help users better understand the data. I learned about the data pipelines that Fluent has and how to use Power BI in the process! In the end, I was able to create more than 10+ overview pages.
What skills have you gained during your internship?
I learned a mix of technical and soft skills. I was able to gain experience with Power BI and Amazon Web Services – both important programs in my career field! Additionally, I improved my presentation abilities through presenting to my team and others, as well as professional writing skills.

Jack Winters

What was your biggest takeaway from the summer internship?
This internship took what I learned in college and applied it to the real world. I have learned and accomplished so much that will help me in the future!
Explain a project you worked on. What did you accomplish?
The most impactful project I worked on was building an ad campaign from scratch. I learned how to take the data that was given to me and go through the steps to build the campaign. I thought this was a huge accomplishment because it combined everything I was learning into one project. It was cool to see the result!
What was your favorite aspect of interning at Fluent?
My favorite aspect of interning at Fluent was always being busy! You are never bored and always doing something unique, so it doesn’t get repetitive. I also love the company culture; everybody I met was super nice and had a lot of patience when I was learning!

Lexi Thielemann

What was your biggest takeaway from the summer internship?
One of the biggest takeaways from this internship was understanding Fluent’s recruiting process and uncovering what makes Fluent unique compared to our competitors.
Explain a project you worked on. What did you accomplish?
This summer I focused on recruiting and was able to get a lot of hands-on experience shadowing interviews and eventually leading my own.
What skills have you gained during your internship?
Throughout the summer I was able to grow my foundation and knowledge in recruiting and learn how to lead interviews on my own. This allowed me to challenge myself and find confidence in my ability to do it successfully.

Tony Jiang

What was your biggest takeaway from the summer internship?
My biggest takeaway from this internship was getting real hands-on experience in the accounting field. Before the internship, I didn’t know what typical accountants do on a day-to-day basis. The knowledge and skills that I’ve gained will help me tremendously when it comes to applying for jobs in the future.
Explain a project you worked on. What did you accomplish?
One of the projects I worked on was identifying and comparing changes in revenue over different quarters. I was able to understand some of the reasons behind the increase or decrease in revenue generated from certain clients.
What was your favorite aspect of interning at Fluent?
My favorite aspect of interning at Fluent was learning more about the company. Even though I was interning in the accounting department, I was able to get a glimpse of what the other teams were doing on the digital marketing side.

Kaitlin Sicard

What was your biggest takeaway from the summer internship?
My biggest takeaway from this internship was the importance of company culture and it’s impact on each employee’s output and success. Having such a supportive team who continually celebrated my accomplishments and guided me through my uncertainties was something that kept me motivated to work and achieve my goals every day.
Explain a project you worked on. What did you accomplish?
I worked on many different projects, however, the biggest one was our CPG campaign featuring insights from the Fluent Pulse. I learned the behind-the-scenes of what it takes to lead, develop, and launch a multi-channel campaign and all the different parts and people that go into it.
What was your favorite aspect of interning at Fluent?
My favorite part of interning at Fluent was the endless learning opportunities. My team allowed me to choose and explore which aspects of marketing I am most interested in and also helped me tackle and lead those projects.

Nancy Fu
Legal Intern, Fluent

What was your biggest takeaway from the summer internship?
My biggest takeaway was the experience of working with regulatory and compliance aspects of law, which were almost completely new to me.
Explain a project you worked on. What did you accomplish?
I reviewed laws and regulations at national and local levels regarding gambling product advertising in the US, UK, Canada and Australia. I then put together documentation to summarize restrictions placed on advertising for these products that might impact Fluent.
What skills have you gained during your internship?
I’ve become much more comfortable navigating legal research involving regulations (and how those interact with case law) and learned how to think about investigations by regulatory bodies. I also worked on a few projects that involved more extensive contract drafting than I’d done previously, which helped to further develop my drafting skills.

Kennedy Shober

What was your biggest takeaway from the summer internship?
I learned more about campaign management and the behind-the-scenes of how social media works.
Explain a project you worked on. What did you accomplish?
I worked on a client account and was able to understand the budget and how the project work is done.
What skills have you gained during your internship?
I learned how to use Facebooks Ads Manager and gained an understanding of how a corporate office operates.

Sofia Murphy

What was your biggest takeaway from the summer internship?
There are many different necessary and equally important parts of any endeavor. Without the marketing team, a product wouldn’t be successful. Without the product team working on the product, there would be nothing to market. Beyond that, there are numerous ways to enhance an already successful product by collaborating and incorporating the work of others.
What skills have you gained during your internship?
I have gained skills and knowledge in marketing, branding, research and development, as well as general corporate practices.
What was your favorite aspect of interning at Fluent?
I enjoyed getting to see the diverse types of work at the company, especially in person. There are so many people working in all aspects of the company on completely different projects, yet they all somehow tie into each other. Working with a diverse group of teams gave me the opportunity to be exposed to many fields beyond mobile app design.

Olivia Garry

What was your biggest takeaway from the summer internship?
My biggest takeaway from this internship was that I am capable of more than I anticipated. Working in account management was also a new field I had never experienced before.
What skills have you gained during your internship?
I improved my communication skills and also became more comfortable asking questions which helped me learn so much.
What was your favorite aspect of interning at Fluent?
My favorite aspect of interning at Fluent was the people I met and the team members I was able to work with.

Erin Reamey

What was your biggest takeaway from the summer internship?
My biggest takeaway was discipline and work-life balance. I realized working remotely can make it very easy to slack off, especially in my position. Luckily, I was able to recognize this quickly and learned how to manage my time so I could be productive every day.
Explain a project you worked on. What did you accomplish?
One project that I worked on was creating a market trend analysis presentation for the paid social team. I researched current trends for each social platform and organized my ideas onto slides that later lead to content opportunities.
What skills have you gained during your internship?
I improved my ability to multitask and gained a better understanding of media buying. I wanted to learn more so my manager and I had one-on-one Zoom calls to review new concepts – I should be running my own ad campaign soon!

Kimberly Berganza

What was your biggest takeaway from the summer internship?
Learning the back end of the biggest social media platforms such as Facebook, Snapchat, and TikTok.
Explain a project you worked on. What did you accomplish?
I worked on building Facebook ads for a client and delivering a clear message to their target audience.
What skills have you gained during your internship?
I have further developed my teamwork skills. I have also gained new skills in data analytics, SEO, content marketing, project management, campaign optimization, and CRM.

Zach Zeller

What was your biggest takeaway from the summer internship?
My biggest takeaway from the internship would be the technical skills that I learned on the job.
Explain a project you worked on. What did you accomplish?
I worked on creating overview tabs for our Microsoft Power BI dashboards. The purpose of this was to have a place where all relevant information is displayed in plain view.
What was your favorite aspect of interning at Fluent?
My favorite aspect of interning at Fluent was connecting with the other interns.

Sherry Kou

What was your biggest takeaway from the summer internship?
My biggest takeaway from this internship is that the world works in different ways than what we’re taught at school. Also, in the workplace, there is a role for everyone and a right fit for all personalities.
What skills have you gained during your internship?
Unlike operating with a deadline system at school, this internship has taught me how to gather information and present ideas in a fast and organized fashion, as well as how to prioritize tasks based on the needs of the team and our users.
What was your favorite aspect of interning at Fluent?
I loved the community at Fluent. I was able to connect with people from different teams and learn about their roles and professional development.

Theo Zyla

What was your biggest takeaway from the summer internship?
My biggest takeaway is the progression of my soft skills – understanding how to speak to people in a professional setting and being able to create connections is such an important thing.
Explain a project you worked on. What did you accomplish?
I worked on a competitive analysis which allowed me to get a better understanding of AdParlor’s strengths and weaknesses compared to our direct competitors. Based on my research, I was able to think of recommendations for the company.
What skills have you gained during your internship?
I’ve gained skills in the sales world. For example, knowing how to approach clients, how to market myself and the company, and how to work directly with a team to complete projects.

Suebin Kang

What was your biggest takeaway from the summer internship?
There are many, but I would say my biggest takeaway is that so many different people with different fields and lifestyles exist in this world. By interacting and working with many people at Fluent, I’ve learned a lot of new things that I could use and interpret in the future.
Explain a project you worked on. What did you accomplish?
I worked on gift card/banner creatives for Fluent’s digital products, as well as branding and UI for a survey app. Overall, I created 12 gift cards that were applied to Fluent’s rewards websites. I also provided another UI version of the survey app and allowed the product manager to test it with users.
What was your favorite aspect of interning at Fluent?
My favorite aspect was when I visited the office and immersed myself in real work-life experiences. The office was really nice, but at the same time, it felt very different to interact with people in real life.

Cassandra Ventura

What was your biggest takeaway from the summer internship?
Coming into this internship, I didn’t know much about how big companies worked. Now I know how teams effectively communicate, how to approach a problem, and how to use particular platforms.
What skills have you gained during your internship?
I gained networking skills. Before this internship, I didn’t have many opportunities to connect and network with people. At first, it was intimidating to meet with people, but now I really enjoy it. This internship also allowed me to develop my problem-solving skills. There were many situations I faced where I needed to find solutions. I did so by researching and utilizing the resources I had readily available to come up with the best possible answer.
What was your favorite aspect of interning at Fluent?
My favorite aspect would have to be the company culture. It was great getting to work with so many people who were inviting and open to having conversations. The people I got to connect with were super helpful and it was fun to get to know everyone!

Kai Stern Yen

What was your biggest takeaway from the summer internship?
My biggest takeaway was coming to a greater understanding of my strengths and interests.
Explain a project you worked on. What did you accomplish?
I worked on creating a sheet that monitors every call client’s delivery caps. I made it so it can be updated quickly and will conditionally auto format for the greatest convenience.
What skills have you gained during your internship?
I have gained skills in corporate professionalism and vastly improved my Excel capabilities.

Tracy Guang

What was your biggest takeaway from the summer internship?
Learning to navigate the corporate world. There was so much to learn about the intricacies of being in HR. I learned about what it’s like being an HR professional as well as the many duties it requires. This covers everything from acquiring talent, to immigration and the benefits of the general employee experience.
Explain a project you worked on. What did you accomplish?
The internship program. I assisted my manager in setting up the program, onboarding the other interns, coordinating the intern socials, leading a session myself, and helping foster the culture between the interns. It was most rewarding when I heard that the interns were enjoying themselves!
What was your favorite aspect of interning at Fluent?
Meeting everyone. I loved meeting all the other interns as well as connecting with people from all ends of the company and hearing about their experiences and stories.

Manav Paul

What was your biggest takeaway from the summer internship?
My biggest takeaway is the motivation to continue with a career and life like the one I had during this internship.
Explain a project you worked on. What did you accomplish?
I worked on creating a page that allowed the user to upload certain reports and view the data in a clear and readable table. The data in this table could be filtered by date range and keywords and had quick export buttons for PDF, CSV, Excel, and many other formats. Through the creation of this site and completion of the project, I learned and applied software development tools, such as MySQL, MongoDB, HTML, CSS, Bootstrap, Jquery, and more!
What was your favorite aspect of interning at Fluent?
The people. Being a part of the Fluent Internship Program allowed me to attend informative and fun sessions alongside a kind and outgoing group of individuals.

What was your biggest takeaway from the summer internship?
My biggest takeaway was the information I learned about the lead qualification process and how it can be applied to certain niches – specifically what makes one lead better than another in the Medicare & Final Expense categories.
